In this article, I will talk about two recent fads on the Internet. Poker and betting. If those two activities are not recent, their development on-line increases every year. A site like Bwin.com (former betandwin.com) or partypoker.com are nowadays successful companies. With some talent, and luck you can make easily some money. Among my friends, some are earning more than 300 euros per months on that type of site. Some are losing too a lot. That is the risk, it’s quite addictive to play and you can be in bankrupt very quickly.

Today, we are focusing about a thing that everyone loves, making money !                                         Especially about the ways to earn money on the Internet.

Three ways of earning can be analysed : personal, business, and fund raising. Let’s take examples.

Cyber criminality, what the police does to protect citizens.

In this article, I will face the cyber-criminality through the eyes of the police. We all know that the Internet can be dangerous especially for children. it is unfortunately the place of pedophile networks and creepy stuff like that. in front of the immensity of the net, the police has been first lost and suffer from the adaptation of criminals to these new technologies. But a great effort has been done to fill the gap.

We all remembered this summer the arrest of the Canadian pedophile at the airport by Interpol. In fact, western countries allied in this struggle. They all created special police unit to chase pedophiles on the Internet, the whole directly connected to Interpol. Of course, it remains a long struggle, but we can’t say that governments didn’t react.

Identity theft, it can happen to you !

Identity theft has exploded with the emergence of new technologies of information and communication in our daily lives. It seems very logical, people can profit of private informations (like your Credit Card information to buy stuffs, but also your national ID number for an illegal immigrant for instance) and use them on line without photo checking. Many western countries created laws to fight this new form of criminality (details on the Wikipedia article).

Violence on the Internet

Have you watched this video ? This is one of the thousands videos which testify of a recent phenomenon called happy slapping. It is a fad among young people of western countries, notably England and France where a law has been specially created. It consists on attacking people in the streets (or any other public place) just for fun, to record it on a smart phone and then to share it with friends.

I think it’s disgusting to attack people in the street. To my mind, It is deeply inhuman. Civilization is what differentiated us to animals, if you fall into some phenomenon like happy slapping we get back centuries ago. I think movies such as Fight Club or Clockwork Orange have encouraged this. But people have to make the separation between fiction and reality. Violence has always attracted people, but we must fight against our instincts to live in an harmonious society.

cyber-addiction, the case of Japan.

When I was a teenager, Japan used to fascinate me a lot. I read many articles about the samourai culture, the zen, the mangas culture, Tokyo and many others stuff about that countries. In my researches I discovered another reality much darker. Many Japanese are obsessed by the honour and the success at school and they put so much pressure on the shoulders of their kids. Sometimes they just cracked, and became what the Japanese society called a hikikomori. These young persons (mostly guys ,70%) prefer locking in their room at home, playing computers on video games, and surfing on the Internet (they only get out for natural needs). The fact is they prefer their virtual identity that their real one.

Another extreme in this country is the addiction about on-line video games like World Of Warcraft, or Counterstrike. To improve their level, they oblige themselves not to sleep for more than 2 days and sometimes more. An adolescent died again last week because he hasn’t slept for four days. They also pay someone to play at their place, or they spend all their moneys to buy items on e-bay.

Financial crisis and the Internet

Google phone !?

The 22nd of October will open a new window in the Google empire. This gigantic octopus (Google map, images, videos, gmail and many more) will launch his first mobile phone, only one year after Apple and its I-phone. These emblematic brands of the XXI° century decided to invest on that market because mobile phones can combine nowadays music and Internet. They’ll actually, to my mind, become our future computers. It is thus quite normal for the biggest, and the most representative company of the Internet to create a phone.

If we look at the phone more precisely, we notice that it looks like the I-phone of Apple. Simple design, tactile screen but it exists a huge difference between them. The google phone uses Android, a software that I never use. Actually Android was a company that Google bought in 2005, only for developing the links between their platform and mobile phones. The object created is thus conceived as an extension of a computer, like the possibility of reading word and excel pages on it shows it.

Google enters in a saturated market, even Sony the successful Japanese company knew difficulties in that segment. How will they face the concurrence of Apple, Blackberry, Nokia and all these brands. However they can always count on their capital of almost 187 billions dollars… The war is launched, and Google is definitely a great challenger.

What could be more clever than a fox ?

Microsoft has built his success around one word : monopoly. Internet explorer was the rule and basta !

But the resistance was organizing in California around the Mozilla team. After some hesitations around the title they choose a fox for emblem. Actually, they noticed that there wasn’t an alternative to Internet Explorer which has however lots of drawbacks. We can’t manage pop-ups, we receive spams and stuff disturbing liket that. However, no one has never contested the supremacy of microsoft.

In 2004, the first version of Firefox came out. First enormous advantage : IT’S FREE. Whereas we have the impression to pay for Internet Explorer, Firefox is completely free. It deals also a way better with the Web 2.0. I like the logo, it’s more hype that Explorer. It refers also to David agains Goliath, we can build a whole mythology around this software. Nowadays almost 20% of the users prefer Firefox to Microsoft software.
